What are workweeks and why is the proper handling critical for labor law compliance?
Workweeks are defined by federal labor law to be 7 consecutive 24 hour periods (1 week). Special classes of employees can have 2 or even 4 week periods in some cases. In all cases, this "workweek" is the employee's time period for the purposes of overtime calculations.

Workweeks must be accurately tracked and managed in order to calculate overtime correctly. In cases where employee's workweeks change, there are very specific and complex requirements on the way employee pay must be calculated. TimeIPS automates these calculations to facilitate FLSA compliance.

How does TimeIPS calculate overtime? What kinds of rules are available to facilitate compliance with labor law requirements?
TimeIPS calculates overtime based on configurable "Overtime Policies" that can be assigned to groups of employees, and which can change over time. Many rules are available, including hours in the week, hours in the day, work on holidays, 7th day of the week, 7 consecutive work days, work on special jobs, work on special shifts, manual overrides and more.

How do payroll exports differ from reports? What is payroll locking and why is it critical for the accurate tracking of time and pay?
TimeIPS includes a full payroll engine that differs from reporting in that:
  • When payroll is run, it first goes into a "pending" status. In this state, you can review and double-check the time and benefits in the export. If changes need to be made, the payroll becomes "invalidated" and the reason logged. Then, the payroll can be prepared again. This process can happen as many times as needed to get a final payroll.
  • When payroll is complete it can be "finalized." This means that no further changes can be made to any time, benefits, holidays, or overtime rules if such a change would affect the payroll. This ensures that any problems detected after payroll is complete will be handled correctly by either manually unlocking and re-running the payroll, or making a manual adjustment in a future payroll.
